The girls’ major division softball team recently won the District 19 Championship in a game played at Warwick’s Memorial Park against the Montgomery team in a 5-3 win. The girls’ on the team have played together since they were seven years old and have lost in the championships the last two years.

The game was played in front of a crowd of over 100 people. This is only Warwick Little League Softball’s second District 19 Championship ever and the first in the Major Girls 11 to 12 year old division. The team had gone undefeated in the All Star Tournament, defeating Chester, Goshen, the Walkill area, and Montgomery two times to take the title.

The winning pitcher was Mia Rivera with five innings pitched, one hit, and zero earned runs. Olivia Martino pitched the final inning for the save. The offense was led by Eva Garofalo with two doubles and three runs batted in. Melina Garby got two hits, Katie Fiore got one triple and an RBI, and Martino hit two triples.

The girls’ turned an amazing double play, throwing out the tying run at the plate when right fielder Lily Beattie threw out a runner on first base on what would have been a base hit, and first baseman Etta Garofalo turned and threw a strike home to her twin sister, Eva, to cut off the tying run and help preserve the win.

The girls’ continued their quest to the Little League World Series with a game on Sat., Jun. 29 at Harrison Elementary School in the section four tournament. The head coach is Charlotte Garofalo and the assistant coaches are Nick Nicosia, Tucker Lincoln, and Jason Martino. Team members include: Eva Garofalo, Etta Garofalo, Annie Lincoln, Katie Fiore, Lily Beattie, Melina Garby, Olivia Martino, Rylee Moore, Jalyn Rosario, Kiley Cunningham, Mia Rivera, Christie Sass, and Adriana Nicosia.
